The Brueghel family inaugurates artistic autumn in Madrid

We have already said: 2019 is the year of Brueghel , specifically, of Pieter Bruegel the Elder , since the 450 years of his death are commemorated. Now, the Palacio de Gaviria will house not only works by "El Viejo", but also by artists from his saga, the Bruegel.

Pieter Brueghel the Elder, Pieter Brueghel the Younger, Jan Brueghel the Elder, Jan Brueghel the Younger, Jan Peter Brueghel, Abraham Brueghel, and Ambrosius Brueghel , are the protagonists of an exhibition that will open its doors to the public on October 7 and will remain in the halls of the Palacio de Arenal 9 until April 12, 2020.

The exhibition is a journey through time, which we will enjoy led by the hand (and brushes) of the artistic lineage of the Brueghels throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

Our route will start with the first artist of this family tree, Pieter Bruegel the Elder (between 1525 and 1569) . His works are a reflection of the society of the time, but also a reflection on everyday life and the deepest human vices. realistic works of costumbrista scenes (always with a hint of provocation and a final moral), which often represent scenes of peasant life.

We continue with his son, ** Pieter Brueghel the Younger (1564-1637) **, who was in charge of publicizing the work of his father (disseminated in the houses of private collectors) by copying his paintings.

We will take the next step with Jan Bruegel the Elder (1568-1625), the second son of Brueghel the Elder. This one pays homage to his father in style and theme but, like the wayward son of all families, he shows more freedom in interpretation (and highlights the prominence of landscapes and nature in his paintings).

It touches generational relief with the arrival of Jan Brueghel the Young, son of Jan the Elder. A great representative of the flamenco style, he began his career in art by selling his father's paintings and finishing those that were not finished off. Of the eleven children of him, five followed the love of art and painting.

In the exhibition, we will be able to observe the works of **Jan Peter Brueghel (1628-1664) **, who dedicated himself to the floral genre, and continuing with Abraham Bruegel (1631-1697), painter of landscapes and still lifes of flowers and fruits. And, as a climax, a sample of the great and unknown work of Ambrosius Bruegel (1617-1675), his 'Allegory of the elements: earth, fire, water and air'.

The exhibition is completed with some paintings by Rubens, El Bosco or David Teniers the Younger, which give context to the time and close an exhibition sample of the history of European art of the 16th and 17th centuries.

Tickets cost 14 euros.
