Austin Rogue Night Plans

Container Bar

A designer bar in the heart of Austin

Tell me how you are and I will tell you where you should go out at night in Austin . Although the ideal would be for you to open up to all types of music, styles, bars, cocktail bars and audiences. Be weird, my friend. Like Austin, this college town, techie and cultural mecca , which does not need excuses to party 365 days a year. But in case you need excuses, they put them on a plate with festivals like South by Southwest (SXSW), Austin City Limits, Fantastic Fest, Fun Fun Fun Fest… Anyway, once you get here, choose your place.

EAST AUSTIN

The Congress Avenue It divides the city to the east and west, but when locals mean East Austin they mean the part of the city past I-35. Further east still. That's right, the reference points in this city are the river and its highways. But to get here you can walk from the downtown area. It's the good: Austin is widespread, and public transport is heavy, but between some of the coolest areas you can get around on foot.

According to an unscientific survey of Uber drivers under the age of 35, East Austin is the area to go for a crazy, less touristy night out. Something more local, authentic and fun thanks to places like Hard Luck Lounge , a beer garden with live music. Or in the Mezcalería Tobalá, an almost secret bar, because it is on the second floor of another bar.

Though since you're coming to Texas, and you're in East Austin, go to The White Horse for honky-tonk and tacos. Live country music and spicy food. I mean it.

SOUTH CONGRESS

Or as moderns call it, SoCo , that here they are not less than in New York giving strange names . The southern part of the city across the river has been the trendy neighborhood for a few years now, but it continues to change. The walk along South Congress Avenue is more in the evening, when it's not too hot to go from store to store (from Treasures Trading to Uncommon Objects and some candies at Big Top Candy), and live music begins to play on the patios and terraces of the bars and restaurants. A good time to go is the first Thursday of every month, when the shops close later. But if you don't fall for that then, any day is a good day to sing at Ego's karaoke, or stop by the legendary The Continental Club, open since 1955. And if you get hungry for a walk, a snack at Snack Bar or a taco at Güero's Taco Bar.

DOWNTOWN

You will pass through here yes or yes. 6th Street or Dirty Sixth It is where all the popular bars of the city meet, one after another, but so popular that you almost have to flee. It is a more youthful environment (younger than you, yes) and very touristy, national tourist, if you know what I mean (have you seen Hangover in Las Vegas ? Those college hangouts?). But in any case, it is worth a walk and a look and among the dozens of bars there are more than salvageable places. Like Easy Tiger, a hipster backwater shortly before making the jump to East Austin, of course. His patio next to the canal with ping pong tables, his artisan bread, his local beers...

**The Side Bar and Barbarella**, a couple of blocks north, are the kind of cheap beer dive bars that don't disappoint. And at the other end is the beautiful bar of The Driskill , the most beautiful and oldest hotel in the city. Although of course, the definitive plan in Dirty Sixth is to get into the Alamo Drafthouse cinema for a midnight session and go for popcorn, order beer and a hamburger.

Across Congress Avenue, on the west side, but still in Downtown, the Warehouse District is now waking up around the Austin City Limits. Also with interesting bars like The Elephant Room.

RAINEY STREET

The street of the modern cocktail bar. You have to go to this corner of the city, around four blocks away, to find the highest concentration of bars with specialized menus and signature cocktails, such as The Clive Bar, with a patio and live music; or the Illegal Bar, specialized in mezcal; or the new Geraldine's, the bar and restaurant of the Hotel Van Zandt. And if you're looking for more local beer and a designer bar, the Container Bar, built, as its name suggests, from shipping containers.
