The data obtained through innovative laser technology reveals, among other things, extensive street and channeling of water achieved with mechanisms that historians did not believe possible at that time. The exciting thing about this discovery is that it will allow archaeologists to question and rethink all we know up to this point of the Khmer Empire, especially, regarding its scope during the twelfth century and, especially, its decline in the fifteenth century.
To make this finding, archaeologists used lidar , a system by which lasers fired from a helicopter towards the ground are used that cross the thickness of the jungle, obtaining a set of very detailed images of the earth's surface. The data was taken in 2015, in what is considered to be the largest study carried out with this system by a team of archaeologists who analyzed 1,901 km2.
