Fulford began work on the series in 2015 as a class project. “The teacher asked me to create a participatory artwork for one of my last projects for the course. I realized that the interaction with the audience and experiencing the art were the real objective of the work” , tells the author to Traveler.

When she announced that she was accepting material for her project, she received phrases from 30 different countries . “After creating 15 images in the first year, I decided to take another year off to reflect. This 2017 I have resumed the series and already I am working on new images and accepting submissions via direct message on my Instagram account, @peytonfulford.”

I still think we almost made it

To create Abandoned Love, Fulford works with the received phrases. “Once I have them, I look for a location that matches the phrase, I create the posters myself, I hang them in an abandoned place and I capture the image” . The ironic point comes from the colorful garlands, like a birthday party, that she uses to give life to such melancholic messages.

You left and now I miss you

She assures on her website that the set of photographs works as a vision of the physical and emotional loss suffered during heartbreak. “I wanted to materialize a private moment, sharing it publicly. I think it is interesting to transform the intangible of the internet into a tangible creation, which is visible not only online, but also in the real world. Sharing such personal phrases from text messages or journals is not only liberating for me, but for the person whose delivery is literally being transformed into a work of art. Helps individuals feel relief or a sense of closure , while they are helping other people who see my work to understand that they are not alone”.
