The owner, William Secord, He was the first director of The American Kennel Club Dog Museum in New York from 1981 to 1986.

“I started the gallery in my apartment and eventually moved to 52 76th Street, where I stayed for 25 years,” William tells Condé Nast Traveler.

Secord published his first book of paintings of dogs in 1992, Dog Painting 1840-1940: A Social History of the Dog in Art , of which six editions were printed. Later four more would arrive.

His last book The American Dog at Home, The Dog Portraits of Christine Merrill , features various Merrill clients – including bandleader Leon Fleisher, interior designer Bruce Bierman and writer Barbara Taylor Bradford – her dogs and her collections.

“99% of my inventory are classic works from the 19th century, divided into three groups: sporting, purebred or pet. Many of the clients want old works of their dog's breed to trace the history of its evolution,” he explains.

Dog painting is a predominantly English genre, so many of the works are by English artists such as Edwin Landseer, Arthur Wardle, Maud Earl, George Earl, and John S. Noble.
