The history of the Virgin dates back to the end of the 15th century when, among some thorns, in an inhospitable meadow in the Sierra de Aizkorri, she appeared to a shepherd who only managed to exclaim: Arantzan zu? ('You among thorns?' in Basque). Our Lady of Arantzazu is the patron saint of Guipúzcoa. Her feast day is celebrated on September 9.

Currently, in sound 24 Franciscans who live in this Shrine, guarding Andre Mari, praying, but also maintaining and safeguarding the Basque literary tradition ; in fact, the library of these Franciscans is still a landmark in the history of literature of our country.
