CHINA
The Asian giant is a laboratory of flavors when it comes to gastronomy, and even more so when it comes to potato chips. The classics that are easy to find in Chinese supermarkets are Cucumber flavored potatoes -they assure that they are very good-, lemon flavour, Mexican-style chicken with tomato, just tomato and Italian-style meat.
But here is not the thing. There are other more bizarre flavors that are sold in limited editions. Attention: Lays “Hot and Sour Fish Soup” ( hot and sour clam chowder chips), tea flavor, blueberry flavor, or the combination of Lay's “Pepsi And Chicken” (chicken fries and Pepsi) . It may seem crazy to us, but both fish soups and chicken and cola mix are dishes that the Chinese love. And that is also reflected in this type of snacks. Everything is testing.
JAPAN
The Japanese also love to experiment with the flavors of French fries. Therefore, don't be surprised if you find bags flavored with wasabi, mayonnaise, salted seaweed (kombu), sour plum, yuzu-shoyu (soy sauce), Katsuobushi (a type of fish), or roasted corn . As in China, some flavors are limited editions that test the curiosity of the Japanese. The ones you like the most, stay on the market.
But if there are some potatoes that are all the rage among the Japanese, they are French fries with consommé. Calbee is the queen brand. Also watch out for jagariko , some potato chips in the shape of a bar that are very fashionable and that appear with flavors such as pumpkin gratin, cod roe with butter or soy sauce with wasabi.
ENGLAND
Brits love crisps, especially their classic flavors like cheese and onion and salt vinegar. Both are very familiar to us. However, there are other flavors that are not so: beef flavored fries, sour cream, prawn cocktail, Worcestershire sauce, smoked bacon, Cheddar cheese, and BBQ pork or chicken. The queen brand: the British Walker. Among its star flavors are the walker sunbites with sweet chilli and the special edition they took out of Chili and Chocolate , a sweet and spicy challenge for those with a sweet tooth.
UNITED STATES
The United States is the paradise of "guarrindongadas", although after seeing the flavors that exist in Asia, we are not so surprised to find maple bacon or cheddar beer fries. Still, let's not trust. Doritos came out with a limited edition called 'Late Night All Nighter Cheeseburger'. The idea was to recreate the taste of that cheeseburger that one is wanting to bite after a long night (hence its peculiar name). Other American rarities: the Lays Waffles with chicken or the Cappuccino , some coffee, cinnamon and cocoa flavored potatoes that, by the way, were withdrawn because they were not very popular.
The pita chips that succeed in the US
Another thing we must not forget is that Americans like extreme flavors. Brands like Kettle Brand sell bags of the most curious potato chips. The latest flavors to hit the market are somewhat spicy: pepperoni, jalapeño, red curry, roasted garlic and Buffalo Bleu. Lays launches its flavored potatoes ginger and wasabi; while other brands like Cape Cod advertise their limited editions of crab and herbed Italian cheese flavors. For those looking for something more original, the firm Stacy's offers pita chips delicious.
SWEDEN
Sweden is another country where we also find very varied flavors of potato chips. Along with the traditional Lättsaltade (to the point of salt), we discover others such as triple onion (mixture of roasted red onions, spring onions and a hint of wild garlic) , Sourcream & Chives (Sour cream and chives) , sriracha (thai sauce) , creamy taco (taste of classic taco seasoning and a little fresh sour cream) or the hot sweet peppers (mixture of strong and mild peppers) to destroy the palate, although they assure that they are addictive.
And the list goes on: Swedes are very fond of copying American flavors, like Grilled cheese & Onion - Texas style (flavor of grilled cheese and onion sandwich, very typical of the southern United States). They also have the Dill & gräslök (dill and chives) or the Double hot chili & sourcream (red chili, green chili and sour cream), a real bomb. The successful Swedish brands: Olw and Estrella. And if you also add dips to these strong flavors or the flavored water that Sweden loves so much, the mix is explosive.
ARGENTINA
In Argentina, fries are mostly crispy. And the ones that they like the most are those of the Lays brand, whose flavors do not leave anyone indifferent either. there are of Ketchup, Pizza and Cheese and Cream & Onion. You can also find the flavors Lay's restó stuffed potato with chives, Mozzarella with tomato and basil, Loin with caramelized onion and Lemon Chicken. And it is that in Argentina, everything looks different with a potato in the mouth.
FRANCE
In France, French fries become more gourmet in restaurants like Faison de la Frite (something like La Casa de la Patata Frita). No bagged potatoes here, these are real potatoes with the most chic flavors: there are garlic, rosemary and curry , although the one that triumphs most for its originality is that of Risotto, made with rice, white wine and parmesan .
