Everest begins the largest garbage collection campaign in its history

The goal is to clear Everest.

The goal: clean up Everest.

Everest has become the world's tallest garbage mountain , in its 8,848 meters of altitude there is practically no space, even for hikers.

Imagine how serious the situation must be for all these agencies to get down to work on this campaign: the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, the Ministry of the Environment, the Nepal Army, the Nepal Mountaineering Association , the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee, the rural municipality of Khumbu Pasang Lhamu and the Nepal Tourism Board.

The restrictions on the entry of tourists to the most famous base camp in the world have not borne much fruit, despite the fact that they have already collected more than eight tons of trash last spring , according to BBC sources.

The Chinese government launched this measure in December 2018 allowing only access to 300 mountaineers a year and the prohibition of tourists in the Chinese base camp (which is accessed by car). The fact is that the latter has always been more accessible than the Nepalese for most tourists, which is reached after two weeks of walking.

Unfortunately, this measure has not been enough to stop the amount of garbage dumped on the sacred mountain. Taking into account that only in 2015 up to 40,000 people passed through here , it is possible to imagine the arduous task that is presented to him from now on in all the camps.

In fact, since 2014 standards have already been established to control waste, for example, that each mountaineer be the one to transport their own garbage, in addition to collecting about 8kg with them, but it was not being fulfilled.

NOT AN EASY CAMPAIGN

On April 11, the most ambitious campaign to date became official with which they intend to collect some 10,000 tons of garbage , among which, according to official sources, are oxygen bottles, tents, ladders, cans...

In addition to some 300 corpses buried under the ice Y tons of excrement . This was confirmed by The Himalayan Times newspaper.

A Chinese company has offered to solve the excrement problem by installing ecological toilets in the mountains, but it has not yet been launched.

The task will not be easy, taking into account the orography and the unevenness. Climbing, which will be almost daily, will focus on the two most affected areas : South Coll (7,900 m) and Camp II (6,500 m). And although it will be effective during the next month, they want it to be indefinite.

for the campaign will allocate 30 million rupees , about a few 250 thousand euros ; and they will participate sherpa groups of more than five people, but they also have the objective of involving the local population with economic incentives.
