Brooklyn bridge

Through this bridge of 1,825 meters in length 145,000 cars circulate daily . Although the title of the largest suspension bridge in the world was short-lived, it has always been a culture icon and the backdrop for numerous films, such as Saturday Night Fever or Tarzan (and that's not to mention Woody Allen).

Designed by John Augustus Roebling, it was the first steel bridge, a colossal $15 million project that cost the lives of 27 people during its 13 years of construction. It is supported by two granite pillars with double arcades and is based on a system of braces and steel cables.

One of the first people to cross it on May 24, 1883 was Emily Roebling , along with President Chester Arthur and Governor Grover Cleveland. Emilie got there because she was the daughter-in-law of John A. Roebling, designer of the bridge, and the wife of Washington Roebling , son of the first and chief engineer of the project. When her husband fell ill due to Aeroembolism, the disease of divers, Emilie took charge of the works until they were finished, confronting her husband's enemies and the prevailing machismo at the time. Today a plaque of her remembers her at one of the bridge entrances.
