Christ the Redeemer Rio de Janeiro

Spectacular views of Rio from Christ the Redeemer.

With Rio at his feet, Christ the Redeemer watches with open arms the future of the city from the top of Mount Corcovado, humpback in Portuguese, in clear reference to his shape. It was inaugurated in 1931, and with its 30 meters high it is the largest Art Deco statue in the world. The sculpture, which was designed by the Brazilian Heitor da Silva Costa, was transported to the top of the mountain in pieces, which were later assembled. Michael Jackson or Diana of Wales enjoyed its beauty and the 360-degree views of Tijuca National Park, the city and Guanabara Bay, as the monument rises 709 meters above sea level.

In its short life it has managed to be the symbol of the city, reaching the category of national emblem for Brazil, such as Big Ben in Great Britain or the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Also, in 2007 it was declared one of the new 7 wonders of the world. Access to the monument can only be done in two ways, by taxi or by funicular. The trem do Corcovado is a rack railway that leaves from Cosme Velho, and makes three stops on the way to the monument. The first at the International Museum of Naïf Art of Brazil (rua Cosme Velho, 571), the second at the colonial Largo do Boticário and the third at the Paineiras rack railway station, the perfect place to enjoy incredible waterfalls in the interior of the urban jungle of Tijuca. It is not advisable to descend from Corcobado on foot when night has fallen, since robberies are the order of the day.
