Valverde de la Vera fights against the sun with crochet
Leading Tejiendo La Calle is Marina Fernández, to whom the Cultural Association of Valverde de la Vera proposed to carry out an intervention in the town. Fernández, who carries out "ephemeral architecture projects and interventions in spaces" saw an opportunity "to launch a collective project in which anyone who wanted could collaborate" , she explains she speaks to Yorokobu.
Weaving La Calle caught the attention of many women from the town who began to weave their pieces. For it, they use plastic from shopping bags or garbage that is turned into strips. They follow the traditional crochet technique, but on a large scale, and use large needles to cover larger surfaces, although there are those who prefer the classic ones to achieve more detailed motifs. in the designs representations of the collective imaginary of the place alternate with the new proposals that the participants incorporate.
The parasols guide the steps to the square
The parasols that are made are waterproof, light and do not take up space. In this way, they can be stored from one year to the next. At night, the lights that are incorporated guide the steps of passers-by to the town square.
The participants, mostly women, have a link with the town, either because they live there or because they have their second home in Valverde de la Vera. In the months prior to installation, each one weaves her pieces individually or in association with other people. Once a month workshops are organized to see the evolution of production and share knowledge and experiences.
The result "It helps to express the very identity of the place and becomes a support for the intentions and desires of the participants in the project. It welcomes visitors and collaborates in creating an atmosphere with a spirit of celebration", they explain on the project's website. We travel through the works of art that cover the streets of Valverde de la Vera.
