In 2005 a man named Brad Neuberg started an experiment in San Francisco. He was not happy in his work so he enlisted the help of a life coach – this man was a pioneer in many things – and he understood that he had to change something.
He had been a freelancer before and he missed the independence of working for oneself, but he also liked the structure of working with other people. He found a well-priced space, set up eight tables, and began offering free Wi-Fi, a shared dining table, massages, meditation breaks, and bike rides. Legend credits him with having created the first coworking space in the world.
Thirteen years later, it is estimated that there are 10,000 shared offices like that around the planet. And while in Spain the figure of the self-employed is growing unstoppably, we are witnessing a boom of spaces for entrepreneurs: it is estimated that there are some 1,000 spaces of co-working in our country, almost all concentrated in Madrid and Barcelona.

Today the concept of coworking – which comes from the terms collaborative and working, in English – is not only sharing a physical space and a series of office services (reception, reprographics, tax domiciliation, training), but also tries to establish a community.
