Oslo will be a city without cars

Oslo wants to put an end to pollution in the city and to this end, the Government has launched an ambitious plan that will drive polluting cars out of the city center. Exceptions will only be made for people with disabilities and vehicles for loading and unloading goods from the downtown shops. According to the British newspaper The Guardian, this plan seeks to reduce car traffic in Oslo by 20% by 2019.

To improve mobility in the city center, 60 kilometers of bike lanes will be built and a strong boost will be given to public transport. “We want to make the city better for pedestrians and cyclists. It will be better for local stores and for everyone,” says Lan Nguyen Marie Berg of the Green Party.

Although cities such as Paris, London or Madrid have carried out temporary car circulation bans or congestion charges to reduce traffic, Oslo will become the first European capital to permanently ban motor vehicles from entering its old town. This ban is part of the Government's plan to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 50% in 2020 compared to 1990 levels. An example to follow.
