We have walked Madrid's Gran Vía hundreds of times and we have seen, from afar, the Schweppes neon. Or if we haven't walked, we've seen it in the movies, which is sometimes more real than walking. With the concept "neon" it is easy to maintain a love-hate relationship . Just think of Times Square: it's almost unbearable in its pop baroque but, for that, it's hypnotic. Madrid is not Manhattan, nor Las Vegas, another temple to neon. Nor does he need. In Madrid, with the beautiful neon of the Capitol Building, we have plenty. This light, made up of 104 neon lights, is one of the most famous in Spain. And it's protected, so let's breathe easy.

Well, dear all, here comes the revelation. Behind this sign there are some hotel rooms . This building is occupied by Hotel Vincci Capitol . It is the only one in all of Spain that is in an active cinema. Actually, the Capitol building, as we know it, is the Carrión building. In the 1930s, when it was designed by the architects Luis Martínez-Feduchi and Vicente Eced y Eced, it was something unusual in the city due to its art-deco style, its reminiscent of New York skyscrapers (although it had only fourteen floors) and its its technical advances: it was one of the first to have air conditioning.

The rooms we are talking about are the skylight rooms and they are on the 10th and 11th floors of the hotel , 1102 and 1002. They are semicircular, with a round bed in homage to the top of a soft drink bottle, bubble-patterned carpeting and part of the furniture in fluorescent yellow. The most interesting thing, with the permission of the drink, is the view. The entire front wall is a glass window overlooking Gran Vía , which unfolds before your eyes, all cool like a good Madrilenian, without needing to be Fifth Avenue.

The light is on from dusk until 2 in the morning and from 6:30 until dawn. For one night, the maniacs can put up with it.
