Portugal sweeps the World Travel Awards!
We will never get tired of repeating it: paradise is close by. And the ** World Travel Awards **, known as the 'Oscars' of tourism, have confirmed this by proclaiming ** Portugal ** as 'Best tourist destination in the world' –for the second consecutive year!–.
The neighboring country swept the WTA Grand Final, and it is that the previous award was also joined by that of ** Lisbon ** as Best destination city Y Best destination for a city break.
For its part, ** Madeira ** was appointed Best island destination in the world.
Also awarded were the **Corinthia Hotel Lisbon** (Best City Hotel), **The Vine Hotel** in Funchal (Best Design Hotel), the **Vila Joya** hotel in Albufeira (Best Hotel Restaurant) , and the **Conrad** in the Algarve (Best Luxury Resort).
** Turismo de Portugal **, meanwhile, won the award for the Best tourist office in the world in 2018.
Lisbon is always a good idea
The World Travel Awards were born in 1993 to recognize excellence in all key sectors of tourism and hospitality.
After holding several regional galas in Ras Al Khaimah (United Arab Emirates), Athens, Hong Kong, Guayaquil, Durban (South Africa) and Jamaica, the final of the 25th edition of these awards was held in the Portuguese capital on a night where Portugal was the great protagonist.
Between the finalists who competed to win the award for Best tourist destination in the world there were countries like Brazil, Greece, India, Jamaica, Kenya, Maldives, Morocco, New Zealand, Rwanda, Spain or Vietnam.

Another of the most awarded countries of the night was ** Peru ** which took the prize to best cultural destination Y Best culinary destination. Also Machu Picchu was named the World's Best Tourist Attraction.
The night also left awards in ** Chile ** (Best adventure destination), ** Ecuador ** (Best green destination), Jamaica (Best beach destination), the island of Sir Bani Yas in Abu Dhabi (Best Sustainable Destination) or **Mauritius Island** (Most Romantic Destination).
