Barceloneta

La Barceloneta is a geometric network of narrow streets and low-rise buildings with a r oud marine and popular flavor , built on land reclaimed from the sea. Until a few years ago, La Barceloneta was a degraded area, inhabited by marginal elements, where "good people" did not venture. That was until the renovations prior to the 1992 Olympics returned it to the city.

Currently, artists and students are displacing more and more former residents, who sometimes cannot afford the rising rent prices. If you go around there, we recommend the tapas at La Bombeta bar (Carrer Maquinista)

It was with the construction of the first port of the city in 1447, when the coastline took the shape it has today and Barceloneta also became a beach. It is strange to think that when sea baths became fashionable in the 19th century, initially there were distinctive areas for each sex, with the Baths of San Sebastian who initiated the coexistence on the beach of men and women, not without scandal, of course.

And, in case you see it when walking along the beach, the cubic structure that rises on the beach of La Barceloneta is the work of the contemporary artist Rebecca Horn , installed for the 1992 Olympic Games and named wounded star . Made of iron and glass, from the four misplaced cubes comes out a dim light and can be heard certain murmur which represents the death of the star in its collision with the earth.
