The Kartarpur Corridor , also known as 'Peace Corridor', is a border crossing between India and Pakistan connecting two Sikh shrines and, since last November, it allows Indian pilgrims to cross the border without the need for a visa.

the corridor, which it has a length of 4.7 kilometers , was first proposed in early 1999 but it was not until late 2018 that the foundation stone was laid.

Last November 12, 2019 Coinciding with the 550th anniversary of Guru Nanak's birth, the corridor was completed.

Previously, Sikh pilgrims from India had to take a bus to Lahore to reach Kartarpur, on a journey of about 125 kilometers, despite the fact that from the Indian side you can see from a raised platform the Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur temple, on the other side of the border.

However, now Indian devotees will be able to travel the distance between **Dera Baba Nanak Sahib shrine in Punjab, India and Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur shrine in Punjab, Pakistan** across the international border without the need for a visa.

GURDWARA DARBAR SAHIB KARTARPUR TEMPLE

In this sanctuary the founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak, it was established and brought together the Sikh community until his death in 1539.

Is about one of the holiest places for Sikhs , next to the Golden Temple in Amritsar and Gurdwara Janam Asthan in Nankana Sahib.

Indian Sikhs congregate on the Indian side of the border to perform darshan, the sacred observation of the gurdwara –word with which the place of religious worship of Sikhism is called–.

A HISTORICAL PILGRIMAGE

November 9 was a milestone in the history of Sikhism: it was the first time that Indian Sikhs were able to cross over to the Pakistani side to visit the shrine located there without a visa , something that had not happened since British India was divided into the two territories of India and Pakistan.

According to officials, the corridor can be used by about 5,000 pilgrims a day and up to 10,000 can visit the place of worship daily.

The Pakistan complex has 408 acres of surface (no less than 1,619,000 square meters), being 42 acres (170,000 square meters) the space that the temple occupies.

According to the official page of ** Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur ** -in which they point out that it is the largest gurdwara in the world- access through the corridor is free for all Indian citizens and OCI card holders (Overseas Citizenship of India or Indian Foreign Citizenship).
