Droog: a one-bedroom hotel or the triumph of storytelling

Hôtel Droog is many things and none that we can define with a single word . To say shop or gallery is to deeply disappoint those who thought so. These were the members of the Droog collective, a group of Dutch designers that includes leading figures such as Marcel Wanders, Hella Jongerius or Richar Hutten. They decided gather their universe in this 17th century building and invent something without references . this place are 700 square meters of design that is conveyed in these ways and in different spaces: an art gallery, a garden designed by Claude Pasquer and Corrine Detroyat, a café, a design shop, a place to find niche cosmetics, a fashion Kabinet and all Dutch design in Veltebree.

And finally, The One and Only Room : The room's hotel.

This room is like the rest of the space: huge, luminous, full of Droog objects and all the echo that is presupposed to the city of bicycles. It consists of living room, bedroom, bathroom and equipped kitchen. Let's call it a room or an apartment. The fact is that there is only one, and it is unique. It can be rented for groups of up to 10 people . Like the rest of the space (and almost the country) it has an ironic touch and doesn't take itself too seriously.

Being at Hôtel Droog makes you feel modern and old-fashioned at the same time. Modern because you have known how to get there and, probably, you are having a coffee looking out the windows or browsing scrubs of some brand that you ignored in Cosmania. Outdated because this idea is yet another twist that requires an evolved consumer, an empathetic context and the desire to mess it up with something, initially, unprofitable. Hôtel Droog is a strange micro mall, very much a child of its time, still with few, if any, heirs.

The Hôtel Droog illustrates the relentless search for experiences and storytelling by travelers. Today, the status is provided by the information that is handled. What are the best hotels in Amsterdam? Probably. That they give more play in a chat after table with friends? I doubt it.
