Castle of Saint George

It represents one of the most important tourist attractions in Lisbon, not only for its historical value, but also for the beauty of the panoramic views that can be captured from the top of its walls. The surface, of approximately 6,000 m2, occupies the highest hill in the historic center of the city, by the river, a Prime location for defensive reasons.

There are indications that there were settlements in this area as early as the Iron Age, but it was not until the arrival of the Moors (hence its old name 'Castelo dos Mouros') that the fortification itself was built: a citadel with a floor plan quadrangular about 60 meters on a side. Later, in the twelfth century, the Christian reconquest and the castle passes into the hands of the forces of Alfonso I of Portugal, who rename it 'Castelo de São Jorge' in honor of the martyr Saint George , to which many crusaders professed devotion. From 1255, with Lisbon as the capital of the kingdom, the castle becomes the royal residence and hosts numerous important receptions (such as that of Vasco da Gama on his return from the Indies).

Despite having suffered numerous damages due to earthquakes and attacks that the fortification has been suffering since its construction, the castle is currently in excellent condition thanks to the deep restoration work to which it has been subjected.
