The sheep already graze in the Casa de Campo
That nature is wise and that with the elements that compose it it knows how to regulate its excesses and compensate for its defects is something that we all know, but that we all forget.
For this reason, taking advantage of cattle to clear pastures, thus preventing fires, and to regenerate the soil It is not innovative, it is of an overwhelming logic that is now being introduced into the Cottage from Madrid, where for a few days a herd of up to 600 sheep already grazes.
Sheep in Madrid? Yes!
During the day and always accompanied by a shepherd, they rotate through grazing areas of the forest park that cover some 954 hectares, making sure that they do not access the forest regeneration areas. In the evening, they sleep in pens; and for them to drink, the Madrid City Council has installed six troughs in the Casa de Campo.
The management contract for these pastures has been awarded to the Los Apisquillos cooperative, which will bring a herd of transhumant sheep in danger of extinction, of the Rubia del Molar breed, between mid-October and mid-June. The agreement has a duration of two years, extendable for another two and the cooperative will have to pay the City Council almost 6,000 euros.
Sheep do not consume energy, do not erode and do not pollute the soil. In addition to helping prevent fires naturally, they regenerate the soil with their manure and contribute to biodiversity , thanks to the dispersion of seeds of plant species that come from other areas and travel in the digestive system of transhumant sheep.
The presence of this herd will also be used to develop educational and cultural activities and will bring the rural world closer to Madrid.
