Side facade of St. Stephen's Cathedral
Of Gothic origin, St. Stephen's Cathedral (Stephansdom) is part of the essence of Vienna. Its 137-meter-high spire dominates the city skyline from almost any angle, and Viennese affectionately call it Steffl, short for Stephan. In the same way that its shape can be seen from almost anywhere in the city, the bell tower of the cathedral is the perfect place to enjoy unparalleled views of the city, climbing the 553 steps to the top is really worth it.
Behind its bell tower, the most representative element of the cathedral is its roof made up of polychrome tiles that form a pattern of black, white, yellow and green diamonds, and which was designed to lighten the weight of the building back in 1490. After the bombardments of the Second World Guella, which reduced it almost to rubble due to a fire, in 1945 the Habsburg weapons were included on one of the sides of the roof.
