It was one of the areas most affected by the earthquake 1755, and had to be practically completely rebuilt. The person in charge of this urban planning plan was the Marquis of Pombal (hence it is known as Baixa Pombalina), who structured the geometric street layout and maintaining the old names, which refer to the activities that had historically been carried out in each of them. On the facades of the buildings, which today house numerous shops, it is common to see the typical Lisbon tiles.
The neighborhood houses some of the most important squares and avenues of the city , as the Liberty Avenue , the authentic main artery of Lisbon, whose majestic groves will be the only thing that will make you take your eyes off the mosaics on the floor and the impressive facades of the nineteenth-century buildings. Nearby, also a must-see, is the Rossio Square , which houses the railway station with which it shares its name, and the ** Praça do Comércio **, the most important and spectacular in the city, which served as a gateway for visitors arriving in Lisbon by boat.
