Antipode

A getaway to the Antipodes without leaving Madrid.

A great tree whose roots go deep to the other side of the world. The Antipode logo, and his name, leave no doubt. A tree that provides shade and fruit in Madrid, but with roots that drink from the diametrically opposite end of the world: Australia.

“The idea of Antipode is to combine what is Spanish with its antipodes, Australia, where coffee and great breakfasts they are the best way to start the day for Australians”, says Sergio López who together with Yolanda Nieto have just inaugurated this new restaurant and cafeteria in the Chamberí neighbourhood, open non-stop and with that great breakfast available every day of the week and at any time.

This is not a breakfast, it's a BIG BREAKFAST.

“We are a team that has always traveled a lot and we are very up to date on gastronomic trends, so we were aware of the strong tradition that exists in Australia of enjoying a great breakfast and, above all, coffee”, explains Yolanda, and clarifies that they are not talking about a fusion between these two gastronomies. “Because we are more international, but there is a wink between Spanish cuisine and our antipodes, Australia”.

And what is a great breakfast? Well, something like the breakfast of champions, but really. It means spending time and enjoying the most important meal of the day, and not just on weekends. Borrowing the Australian philosophy, at Antipode they want us to go beyond the grilled croissant or the tomato bar for breakfast. The great breakfast would be “almost a brunch”, explains Yolanda, but you can take it at 8 in the morning, if you want.

And it has an absolute protagonist: “Coffee It is a very important element because we want it to be a very powerful gastro script in Antipode. Along with coffee, we offer a menu of more abundant and elaborate dishes that explain the concept of a great breakfast”.

Antipode

It has different spaces perfect for different times of the day.

Examples: "Certainly. the smash it up dish: some organic eggs to your liking, with tomatoes and mushrooms roasted with rosemary, avocado, beet hummus on seed bread”, says Yolanda. EITHER smoked salmon bagel with creamy herb cheese, roasted tomatillos, kale, organic eggs and salmon roe. EITHER benny eggs with Iberian pork confit, sautéed kale, citrus hollandaise on seed bread. And another more sweet example? Banana brioche with coffee mascarpone cream and candied dried fruit.

Almost a greenhouse, this is its outdoor living room with a large viewpoint.

Troy Payne, Sergio López's trusted chef in his projects in the United Arab Emirates, he is in charge of the kitchen together with the young chefs Alejandro Martín Peregrina and Francisco Javier Pajares Parra. Between the three of them they have thrown almost everything into designing a very attractive breakfast menu, but without forgetting the menu that can be ordered at noon and at dinner. Where there are dishes in which the product and originality prevail over flag inspirations. "Always with Spanish products and the international experience of our team," says Nieto.

Among the dishes that already stand out, just opened the place: semi-dried tomatoes on burrata cheese, the red tuna salad with orzo pasta, bell pepper and lime mayonnaise; sirloin in red wine with mashed potatoes and roasted mini leeks, charcoal octopus tartine with dates and orange grapes or steak tartar with marrow, white garlic and padrón peppers.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

The local, divided into three spaces. The front part with the tables facing the large window at the entrance and the high tables more designed for those more fleeting breakfasts, coffees or a drink after work. The lounge with low tables, full of nooks and crannies to spend long hours. And finally, the communal table, almost a booth for cozy gatherings. Among all of them, the minimalist and welcoming works of art by Curro Rubira and María Ángeles Atauri stand out.
