The Zócalo, passed by Instagram
In the chapter on large-format squares (Tiananmen, Moscow's Red Square... all those to which it is impossible to assign the coveted adjective "flirtatious" in a travel guide no matter how hard one tries), the Zócalo in Mexico City deserves a separate place. Possibly, it even requires a manual with instructions for pedestrians on how to approach such a space: 47,000 square meters starring the frenetic bustle of pedestrians, the noise and fury, sometimes reckless, of drivers.
The breakfasts of Hotel Majestic are, in addition to an open secret, a good antidote to help cope with the excess of this square and its rhythms . This somewhat outmoded hotel with a discreet hidden entrance on Francisco I. Madero street has a large terrace on the eastern side of the square, with views of the Cathedral, the National Palace and the Mexican flag that, in an admirable exercise of coherence to the surrounding scale, presides over the square with its gigantic size.
Depending on what time you arrive, it will be easy for you to find a table and join the army of tourists (mostly ruddy). who, between rheums, take out their iPhones to take panoramic from different points of the square.
Here you can take from an orange juice to some eggs rancheros going through the typical chilaquiles while you take a look, from the heights, at the heartbeat and the coming and going of the epicenter of the Mexican capital. Although the offer is rather conventional and lacks the overwhelming sophistication of the breakfasts of some boutique hotels in this same city or the authentic and greasy charm that can be found in a food market, the views are worth the visit.
