Sam and his grandfather have traveled four stages of the Camino de Santiago. “He is 80 years old and is Catholic; I am 35 years old and I am skeptical, ”he says.
Michaux acknowledges that he did not expect to enjoy it, but nevertheless, he found himself appreciating the meditation and the fellow travelers they met along the way: "When you walk into a city, you really smell, hear and see the gradual changes from rural to urban and vice versa."

But in this pandemic year, creating this list was out of the question for one thing: logistics. Normally, we deploy a small army of photographers in search of those perfect images, which is impossible. In addition, our list is built on the basis of a journalistic imperative: '"What's new? What makes this place such an exciting and different destination – hotel openings, museums, food scene, cultural scene…– that puts this destination on the list?'"
"In this 2021 we face uncertainty. With the recent availability of vaccines, perhaps the travel industry – which provides millions of jobs and is crucial to the global economy – may revive again. But it is difficult to know when and where that renaissance will begin. And a list like that can seem like it makes people rush to planes when there are so many people suffering." That's why the editorial staff of the New York Times decided to change the focus of the list, looking for a new source of information: you, the reader.

Instead of sending our contributors and correspondents, we have focused on another group of passionate travelers, our readers, and we have asked them about their favorite places and why they are worth being included in this list, as well as their images. More than 2,000 responded. After making our selection, a group of journalists interviewed the collaborators. The final decision is a combination of reader submissions and those conversations, condensed and edited for readability."
