Recreation of the ship Victoria

Recreation of the Nao Victoria, the only one that completed the circumnavigation of the world of the five that set sail

They went in search of the Indies and discovered that the Earth was round. The first trip around the world could be explained with data, like the 1,084 days that it lasted, the 85,700 kilometers that were traveled and the five ships that left Seville in 1519 with 245 crew members on board, of whom only 35 returned in a single ship, the Victoria.

However, so much curious data runs the risk of leaving nuances, details, anecdotes, background and consequences along the way. Thus, GoogleArts&Culture, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and Sports of Spain and the Spanish National Commission for the First Round the World, launches a new collection about the expedition that went around the world for the first time when 500 years of the adventure led by Magellan and ElCano are fulfilled.

Route of the first circumnavigation of the world

Map with the route of the first circumnavigation of the world

Documents, historical maps, reproductions of the route and even the possibility of virtually visiting the Nao Victoria are some of the elements that make up The first travel around the world.

The digital display consists of three parts that serve, not only to talk about the circumnavigation of the world itself, but also to know the background and the consequences that it brought. Thus, in the Expedition details of the trip, the historical context and the protagonists will be deepened; maps, travel instruments and elements of the flora and fauna that were found during the journey give shape to Exploration ; and, finally, the section on Transformation It will focus on the consequences of this discovery, those of understanding that we live in a spherical world that is connected through the oceans and the cultural, social and commercial exchanges that this entailed.

All this spun with great sensitivity and in a very didactic and attractive way that invites you to navigate from one topic to another without stopping, in such a way that one begins reading about Magellan and ends up listening to what the communities that inhabit the places we would reach if we repeated the Magellan-Elcano journey today sound.

This project, a true wonderland for lovers of history and expeditions, has been possible thanks to the contributions of 12 institutions. Namely: Spanish Cultural Action, State Archives, Elkano Fundazioa, Nao Victoria Foundation, Seville City Council, Sanlúca City Council, National Museum of Natural Sciences, National Museum of Anthropology, Museum of America, Naval Museum, Maritime Museum of Barcelona and Royal Academy of Gastronomy .
