The Araguaia Biodiversity Corridor will be the largest in the history of South America.

The Araguaia Biodiversity Corridor will be the largest in the history of South America.

In 2020 we echoed one of the worst environmental news of the year: Brazil, along with Indonesia, Peru and Bolivia presented the worst deforestation data in the world. Global Forest Watch announced that 3.8 million hectares of forest mass had been lost on Earth. Brazil at the head of all of them.

In addition, the Amazon, according to a recent study published by the scientific journal Frontiers, can no longer release more C02 than it absorbs due to deforestation and the exploitation of its land.

In counterweight we know the great project of the Black Jaguar Foundation that pretends to be a breath of air for the planet. For the next few years they want to launch the ‘Araguaia Biodiversity Corridor’ , the most ambitious in the history of South America in terms of replanting native forests, a total of 1.7 million trees per hectare.

A BIODIVERSITY CORRIDOR

But, what is a broker and how does it work? A biodiversity corridor consists of strips of reforested land , that is, islands of conservation that go from one point to another and that generate benefits not only at an environmental level but also at an economic and social level.

In this case, 'Araguaia Biodiversity Corridor' will connect two key points: the Amazon jungle and the Cerrado jungle , both with serious deforestation problems (only the Cerrado has lost 70% due to agricultural activity).

According to the team of biologists and scientists behind the project, the corridor will encompass 2,600 km with a width of 40 km located on the banks of the Araguaia River and part of the Tocantins River.

1,700 trees of 50 native species will be planted in each hectare , through five different methods of reforestation, for example direct planting, densification in areas that need it, etc. In addition, this replanting will generate 38 million jobs and 8% of the commitment agreed by Brazil with the Paris Agreement will be fulfilled.

And the most important, the corridor will help absorb more than 200 million tons of carbon . Bearing in mind that the Amazon and Cerrado jungles produce 20% of the world's oxygen and that 30% of the fresh water is filtered here, it is of vital importance that it be carried out.

In total there will be six states benefiting from the project of the Black Jaguar Foundation , which corresponds to 112 municipalities in Brazil and 23,997 rural properties, 96% of which are private.
