Caldera de Taburiente National Park

The Taburiente Caldera.

Declared a National Park in 1954, in La Palma, the Taburiente Caldera it is a huge caldera-like circus just over 8 km in diameter and 1,500 meters deep (one of the largest in the world), whose interior was emptied in lava flows through various ravines , among which the Ravine of Las Angustias , and led to the Puerto de Tazacorte . Like an almost impenetrable wall, the peaks rise violently and exuberantly, reaching up to 2,426 meters in altitude in the so-called Boys roque . With an area of 46.9 square kilometers plus a Peripheral Protection Zone that extends to 59.5 square kilometers, the National Park has a great biological value , being home to a wide variety of plant and animal species that include a large number of Canarian endemisms such as the Viola palmensis or the Palm Graja.

Water is undoubtedly the main wealth of the Caldera . Very popular is the one known as Cascade of Colors , located in the Ravine of the Rivaceras a place full of ocher, green and reddish tones , the result of the ferruginous waters that are born in the basal complex and when deposited create all the nuances in the stone. There are several routes through trails with views of large ravines and wild crags and, although can only be visited on foot , some access sections that lead to the viewpoints can be traveled by car.

The starting point of the well-known Anden route It is very close to the road up to the Roque de los Muchachos Astrophysical Observatory . At about 2,000 meters of altitude, the path begins where the road ends and along its way it discovers the spectacularity of the entire National Park , where the cedars, lards and summit pansies remain triumphant against the hostility of the rock. The phenomenon known as 'sea of clouds', a condensation of stratocumulus clouds carried by the trade winds from the north, forms a small storm that, in horizontal rain, constantly moistens the forests. Crowning the sky, you will feel that you are floating in the void on a authentic calm sea of fluffy white clouds. As if that were not enough, in the distance and between the rays of the sun, it is sometimes possible to distinguish the islands of Tenerife, La Gomera and El Hierro.

Following the path, you can delve into the mystery of the legend of the so-called Roberto Wall , a large stone wall that, according to palm tradition, is devil's handiwork . Roberto's Wall (the name by which the devil is known on the island) cut off the old road that linked Santa Cruz de La Palma and Garafía, preventing the meeting between two lovers. The young man, unable to cross the wall, shouted several times before her: "The soul and the body are going to go through!". He managed to do it, but the young woman woke up dead and she was buried in the Roque de Los Muchachos.
