Traveler Call Maika Makovski

The singer and composer Maika Makovski shows us her most personal Madrid.

What are Traveler Calls? Destiny calls? The call of life? From the trip? We welcome you to a new section of videos starring names from the world of culture (music, cinema, gastronomy, literature...), voiceovers that guide us through special corners, different places that embody their experiences and invite us to discover them.

In the current scenario, the photographer and filmmaker Jerónimo Álvarez proposes to pay tribute to the unbreakable spirit that has kept us united as a society, either through traditional calls, video calls, audios...

The obligation to keep the distance has not prevented us from pursuing a connection: between us and with destiny. Thus, Álvarez proposes us to go through different characters their most personal scenarios, which narrate their reflections and emotions about the space they describe.

“Madrid is going to be what it is. And period”, says Maika Makovski, composer, singer and presenter who takes us to a city that fits like a glove: “Walking, melting into the anonymity of so many people, is something that I find very pleasant”, she tells us

“That conjunction of space and light that the city has gets into my bones”, says Maika, of a Macedonian father and an Andalusian mother. For her, the green areas in the urban area are endearing and hopeful, "The search for utopia", and she invites us to immerse ourselves among the public of the small concert halls, where she – she warns us – bands are being programmed that will be leaders in the coming years.

Maika was born in Palma de Mallorca and has been writing songs since she was twelve years old. More than a decade ago, John Parish, producer of such greats as Eels, PJ Harvey and Tracy Chapman, invited her to record in her studio, where she collaborated with Kim Barr (of Portishead), among others. You have seen her presenting the program La Hora Musa, on La 2, and now, she has just released the video clip –directed by Asier Etxeandia– of Love you til I die, the third single from her latest album, MKMK, which will go on sale on May 28.

“Madrid is oblivious to time, no matter what the weather is like, it is such a rebellious city... Madrid is voices of people, throats, cane glasses. Madrid sounds like a group of people gathered and this cannot be charged even by a pandemic ”, explains the artist, who finds it difficult to create in it, however, perhaps because of the constant movement there is.

The Retiro Park, the Gran Vía and the Caixa Forum are some of the settings that mean something to her. With her help, we discovered a second-hand clothing store on Velarde street and a pastry shop that lifts anyone's spirits, on San Pedro street. And, it couldn't be otherwise, her walk takes us to her rehearsal room in Carabanchel, where we end up celebrating –reeds through– music, life... and the city of Madrid.
