A structure 620 meters long and 40 meters wide integrated into the landscape will bury the M-30 at the height of the old Vicente Calderón stadium, culminating with it the park of Madrid Rio, that will have continuity in its landscape and will see how the quality of the air improves in the area, they explain from the Madrid City Council.

It won't be immediate, no: it is expected that the project, whose works will last 20 months, start in the second half of this year. Therefore, if the deadlines are met, it will be throughout 2023 when the result of a work that will have a base bidding budget of 69 million euros.

Burying the M-30 will give continuity to the landscape and improve air quality in the area

The project foresees maintain the current layout of the M-30, which joins the two mouths of the existing tunnel, allowing entry from San Epifanio street. It will be used to bury it a cover of reinforced concrete walls on the sides and precast prestressed concrete beams supported on these walls. Its foundation will be carried out with perforated reinforced concrete piles, which have been calculated to be able to save the foundation structures of the old stadium and the Cercanías railway tunnel.

On the outside, the façade of the tunnel facing the river will be made up of a granite cloth that will give continuity to the already executed and that will be articulated with the channel through a green slope in which trees and vegetation will be planted to integrate it with the landscape. In addition, it will have three viewpoints that look out over the water from which to gain new perspectives of the park.

When this structure is finished, whose responsibility falls on the Works and Equipment Area, it will be the turn of the Mahou-Vicente Calderón Development Compensation Board, which will be in charge of bring the park to life on the roof following the same landscaping and design criteria that Madrid Río already presents.

During the time that the works last, the circulation of the M-30 will be maintained by the provisional diversion, which will be demolished when the work is finished and traffic is restored to the definitive roadway. Only the roof areas that are close to the current tunnel mouths will require the assembly of beams at night with occasional traffic cuts.
