Cafe of the Nuncio

Divine gatherings.

What would Madrid be without its cafes? What would Madrid have been without its cafes? Those meeting places, gathering places, inspiration, enjoyment. The Cafe of the Nuncio, in the heart of Madrid de los Austrias, has been one of its places during 140 years. In the corner of the Segovia Street with the staircase Crossing of the Nuncio, has always had a privileged place for that contemplation accompanied or alone. A place with so much tradition that it would never finish telling stories. And now, since the month of July, it has been rewritten again.

Cafe of the Nuncio

Classic and modern.

After recovering classics from Madrid and reviving them in their original spirit, such as The Mountain Dairy, Celso and Manolo, the Tavern La Carmencita or the Café Angélica, the Cantabrian group, Deluz y Compañía, has just reopened the Café del Nuncio recovering its soul and taking inspiration from others of european cafes more legendary, such as the Kronenhalle in Zurich, the Daniel et Denise in Lyon, the Savoy in the Czech Republic and the Lancaster in Paris.

“We want the Café del Nuncio to be a café by and for the neighborhood, that contributes to making the gastronomy that is experienced in this area a point of reference”, they explain from this restaurant group that is very concerned about creating a community, and that defines itself as sustainable, due to all the solidarity projects that it has underway.

Cafe of the Nuncio

To make it a café by and for the neighborhood, they have changed its design, adding comfortable and picturesque green velvet sofas and chairs upholstered with liberty fabric. During the day the light enters through its windows; at night, candlelight dominates, but it's always a cozy place. The terrace on the steps of La Travesí maintains its importance, but renews its design, with wicker chairs created by the Catalan interior designer Miguel Milá.

Modernity and classicism go hand in hand in space. The terrazzo floor with the granite and wood bar. The work of the Belle Époque artist, Elie Anatole Pavil in front of the pictures Adrià Cañameras and Edi.

And the same thing happens in the letter, where those who have passed through the other places of the group, will recognize their trace of traditional recipes with a current return. Value the product in dishes that are perfect for sharing, such as its assorted vegetables or its wide variety of tomatoes.

As a novelty, together with the salad or anchovies from Santoña, a nod to the traditional stews of some of the aforementioned European cafes, such as the goulash with organic beef that you could have in a Czech cafe, the Savoy style roast beef or poached wild salmon like the one from the Parisian Lancaster. WHY GO

For taking that already classic tomato steak, but in a new old environment: those steps of the Travesía del Nuncio that breathe the history of Madrid. Because the fact that a classic Madrid café like this one is still open is always good news, and you can only celebrate by going.
