Attention crazy people of torrijas, there is a place in Madrid where you can eat them throughout the year, not only in Lent. We are talking about the old and traditional tavern of The House of Torrijas. Entering inside is feeling that time has not passed . The best thing to do is to start by snacking on some good portions of tripe or squid and then add a sweet touch with generous French toast well soaked in milk. And for them to know us even better, we have to accompany them with a glass of sweet wine.

5. HOME LOOK (Carrera de San Jerónimo, 30)

Madrid is full of centuries-old establishments that love sweets. And among our favorites is house look , in the heart of Madrid de los Austrias. This nougat temple, a pilgrimage point for the most devout gourmands, becomes a benchmark for French toast during Holy Week. Founded in 1851 by Luis Mira, a pastry chef from Jijona who brought the secrets for making nougat from Valencia. His success was such that he became the supplier of the Royal House of Elizabeth II. The place itself is a museum. Today, his great-great-grandson Carlos Ibañez preserves the ancestral recipes that make him famous. And we assure you that the torrijas are made with the same care as the nougat.

6. LA SANTIAGUESA OVEN (Senior, 73)

Another place that we should not miss on our Torrijas route is the Horno La Santiaguesa. From the same family as the Horno de San Onofre, this patisserie, one of the oldest in Madrid, offers a wide variety of French toast. Some draw attention made with white wine and others with chocolate. The secret of its success is in the bread. Here they enrich it with butter and sugar and soak the crumb well with milk, sugar, cinnamon and lemon. The care with which they do it is also noticeable in the result. They are finger licking good.

Three generations have already given their lives for the Antigua Pastelería del Pozo, a temple of artisan sweets founded in 1830. Their bartolillos and hand-made puff pastries are famous. And of course, their torrijas. Made with sponge cakes, in this pastry shop they get drunk to the top with syrup, milk and a little anise. And then they put cream on them. They are delicious. And the good news is that they sell them all year round.

Another traditional pastry shop that surprises us with the flavor of its torrijas is El Riojano. Founded in 1865 by Dámaso de la Maza, pastry chef for the Royal House and for Queen Mª Cristina of Naples, this pastry shop seems to be from another era. Their traditional sweets have that traditional flavor, like the one our grandmothers prepare. And with the torrijas it could not be less: they are made from milk and wine and they are sold at 3.50 euros per unit. If you still have room after the torrijas, try the bartolillos and pestiños from this workshop. They will make you go to heaven.
