A glossary for beginner surfers

Today we describe some of the words or terms that you should know to rub shoulders with the most experienced locals , with beginners or simply when going to a school or a store.

We will go to the basics, without delving into types of boards, types of wave breakers, or that infinite world that exists within the surf culture . Many words are of Anglo-Saxon origin, in many cases we have our own interpretation with a story behind it, although we will talk about that when you know everything that the following means:

Rider : is the surfer himself.

goofy : They are the surfers or riders who position the right foot at the front of the board and the left foot in the back.

Regular : They are the surfers or riders who position the left foot in the front part of the board and the right foot in the back part.

_(In both cases above it does not matter if you are right-handed or left-handed) _

Shaper: It is the craftsman who makes the shape of the boards . Nowadays everything is highly industrialized but the figure of the shaper is still very present.

Leashes: we call you Invention . This is what we call in Spain the rope that joins the surfer with his board. It is usually placed on the rear foot and is a great lifesaver as well as making sessions easier for riders.

wax: The well-known paraffin usually comes from beeswax and incense . Currently grips are used in combination with wax. Both options ensure grip or adherence to the board . It basically helps you not to skid.

Wall: It is the horizontal line of the wave. The vertical area and the place where you slide in search of speed.

Lip: In English lip , is the part of the wall and foam that falls on the wall ending up closing. It is the fall of the crest and moments before the crest itself.

Tube: It's that hole where surfers hide. Space of enjoyment, silence and emptiness where the surfer. It includes the area that surrounds under the fall and breakage of the wall on the plane. Yes, it is that image that you have in mind that is the queen maneuver and it is called exactly the same as its stage.

Right and left: Direction of the waves at the time of breaking. Always looking from the water to the shore. The surfer surfs them to one lake and to the other depending on the break.

Onshore: Bad wind from sea to land that destroys the waves. That is, a choppy sea.

offshore: Good wind from land to sea combing the waves and leaving them clean and perfect.

spot: Place where surfers meet and break the waves.

And here is the first installment. Little by little we will get into the fundamental maneuvers and rules. Now you can chat face to face with some surfers. Get your board ready, we're in wave season!
