It is the global reference resource for knowledge on sustainable fashion and the role of the fashion industry in the climate emergency.

Condé Nast today announced the launch of the Sustainable Fashion Glossary , the global reference resource on sustainable fashion and the role of the fashion industry in the climate emergency.

The Glossary is part of the company's commitment to become a voice for change, and is designed to increase and develop knowledge about sustainability and provide guidance on its most relevant key terms and topics.

The Condé Nast Sustainable Fashion Glossary is the result of an alliance with the Center for Sustainable Fashion (CSF) of the London College of Fashion at the University of the Arts London (UAL) , with input from the editors of Vogue and reviewed by a network of global sustainability scholars and researchers.

It is a crystallization of the world's leading educational and research practices, crafted with academic rigor and from Condé Nast's unique perspective on the fashion industry.

The Condé Nast Sustainable Fashion Glossary is:

  • An easy to use guide, divided into categories that relate to sustainability in fashion: cultures, materials, production, buying habits and best practices.

  • A digital resource, open to all and available at condemnast.com.

  • It includes more than 250 terms , with references for further reading and research.

  • Divided into four key themes: climate emergency; environmental impacts of fashion; social, cultural and economic impacts of fashion, and key elements of fashion and sustainability; plus 10 subtopics covering essential aspects of fashion and sustainability.

  • Will be regularly updated with new definitions to reflect the evolution of debates on the climate emergency, fashion and social change.

"Raising awareness of the global climate crisis is critical, but now it's just as important move the global climate debate forward and focus on possible solutions. To enrich the debate on creating more sustainable fashion, our industry needs a shared language and a set of scientifically correct definitions to which we can all refer. We will continue to update the Glossary with the help of our academic partners," said Wolfgang Blau, Global Chief Operating Officer of Condé Nast and Chairman of Condé Nast International.

Fashion and sustainability

Fashion and sustainability must go hand in hand

The Glossary was developed when Vogue directors identified the need for strong editorial guidelines and educational resources for the coverage of sustainable fashion. Condé Nast's renowned media brands, including Vogue, GQ, Wired and Vanity Fair , focus part of their content on reporting on issues related to climate change and educating readers about how to live more sustainable lives.

The Glossary helps these editorial teams and audiences around the world, strengthening the company's authority as a trusted voice in the public debate on sustainability.

"What we work for should reflect what we stand for. It is time to ask ourselves if we are well represented, as well as if we are well presented. We can create a new era of beauty and style from an intimate understanding and connection with our most precious asset, the Earth, the greatest designer the world has ever known. By working with leading Vogue directors globally, we have been able to develop a glossary of vital terms, a trusted reference point that sees fashion as a means of exemplifying our interdependence with nature and with each other." Dilys Williams, Professor of Fashion Design for Sustainability and Director of the Center for Sustainable Fashion.

For now, the Glossary is only available in English. The goal is that in the future it can be translated into French, Japanese, Spanish and simplified Chinese.
