Floating Rotterdam, sustainable floating accommodation.

rotterdam always surprises us with new future initiatives. A few months ago we learned about the High Line project, a new two-kilometre park similar to the one in Manhattan in New York, that is, a space that promises to be a lung for the city.

Following the trail of sustainability, the city has announced a new project that will officially open on July 1 at the port and what is its name Floating Rotterdam . These are four sustainable accommodations, which they have called Wikkelboats , which will be installed temporarily next to the Rijnhaven floating park, also planned for the coming months.

Wikkelboats are innovative and sustainable small houseboats made mainly of cardboard that offer a range of short-stay possibilities and a base to explore the city from another perspective.

The new Wikkelboats are presented as emerging locations for any plan, from meetings, workshops or pleasure visits to the city as if it were a boutique hotel. They have panoramic views, nice terraces, plus all the necessary indoor facilities such as a fully equipped kitchen, bathroom and living room, and some even offer to a built-in Jacuzzi that is invisible during the day.

About their design they are thought to be self-sufficient, and their manufacture has 24 layers of recycled and treated cardboard. “We are very happy that our plan has been given the green light and that we can now contribute to making this part of Rotterdam even more fun and beautiful, together with the municipality and other initiatives in and around Rijnhaven. The four Wikkel boats are cleverly designed so that they can be used multifunctionally. ; during the day as a meeting area or lounge and, at night, as rooms for 6-8 people per ship. It is not possible to navigate with them”, stresses one of its founders Sander Waterval in a statement.

They will be available from July 1 and you can already book your stay on their website.
