Venice is ready to charge admission
The Regulation had been approved since the end of February, but there were details to polish. Thus, in a new vote by the Municipal Council of Venice, which has resulted in 18 votes in favor and 5 against, the changes related to the rates and the collection of the tourist tax, which goes from being the responsibility of the carriers to being the responsibility of the City Council.
WHAT IS THE TOURIST TAX?
The tourist tax is the colloquial name with which to refer to the 'Regulation for the institution and discipline of the contribution of access, with any transport, to the old town of Venice and other smaller islands of the Lagoon'. Namely, the fee that will have to be paid to access the old town of Venice and other smaller islands of the Lagoon.
The tax will only affect tourists who do not spend the night in the city
With this initiative, the City Council of the Italian city intends not only regulate arrivals to achieve a sustainable balance between visitors and residents, but to raise money to deal with the extra costs that tourists suppose for Venice (cleaning operations, waste disposal, maintenance of banks, bridges and heritage…) .
WHO HAS TO PAY IT?
One-day tourists, that is, those who do not sleep in the city. Those who stay in any of the facilities offered by the hotel park of the metropolitan area (category that does not include tourist rental flats) are exempt when paying the overnight rate.
HOW MUCH SHOULD I PAY?
In 2020 , there will be one flat rate of 3 euros, which will amount to 6 euros the days of 'bollino rosso' (critical influx of tourists) and 8 euros the days of 'bollino nero' (especially critical level).
already in 2021 , the fixed entry rate will rise to 6 euros, going down to the 3 euros in the days of 'bollino verde' (days of lower influx of people), passing to the 8 euros in the days of 'bollino rosso' and reaching the 10 euros in those of 'bollino nero'.
In the case of day travelers accessing the old town of Venice or the smaller islands of the Lagoon on a cruise ship or other type of vessel, it has been established a flat rate of 5 euros during 2020 and 7 euros in 2021.
With the money raised will be invested in the maintenance of the city
WHEN WILL IT BEGIN TO BE APPLIED?
As of July 1, 2020.
HOW WILL THE COLLECTION BE CARRIED OUT?
In the first approval of the Regulation, it was established that it would be the carriers who, through the tickets sold, would collect the tax. However, after the discontent generated in that sector, the new vote establishes that It will be the City Council who assumes the collection.
For this, it is being studied the creation and development of a prior collection system that allows payment through different channels (credit cards, PayPal, bank transfer…) ; the establishment of a sales network with automatic ticket vending machines; the development of control systems, as well as the activation of an information campaign For the users.
After acquiring the corresponding title, the obligation of travelers will be limited to showing it to the people designated by the City Council to perform control tasks.
Another objective of the tax is to achieve a balance between visitors and inhabitants of Venice
