After the reopening of the Bourse de Commerce-Pinault Collection, on this occasion another novelty aims to revive the cultural scene of the French capital: the reopening of the Carnavalet Museum , the oldest in paris located in the heart of the Le Marais neighborhood.

Having had as main objective to recover the historical monument in these four years of renovations, the Carnavalet Museum opened its doors on May 29, improving both the presentation of the collections as the accessibility and establishing a new route for those visitors who decide to immerse themselves in its more than 625,000 works.

Renewed by the agency Châtillon Architects, Snøhetta and the NC agency, Nathalie Crinière , the work has restored the two mansions that make up the museum: Carnavalet and Le Peletier de Saint-Fargeau.

"The renovation plan of more than 110 million euros started in 2015 by the City of Paris could not have seen the light without the determination and ambition of Delphine Levy, founder and general manager of museums of paris from 2013 to 2020", they explain from the museum.

THE RENOVATIONS OF THE CARNIVALET MUSEUM

The renovations of the Carnavalet museum allowed improve accessibility , enhance the value of the building, rediscover its architecture and also renew the visitor experience. As they have stated, now the Carnavalet Museum is accessible to the public with motor disabilities 99.5%, more than 3,800 works are exhibited so that children can appreciate them and a total of 3,900 square meters have been designated for permanent exhibitions dedicated to the history of Paris.

Thought like a real journey through the past and present of Paris , the new route, built for the first time according to a continuous chronological thread, reveals great treasures ranging from prehistoric times to the present day. Artworks, sculptures, objects of history and memory , signs, photographs, drawings, medals, coins and archeology collections have been arranged chronologically.

In addition to having restored all the works , the museum also offers interactive digital devices , such as filmed interviews, listening spaces, documentaries, animated films and interactive screens, which seek to enrich knowledge around historical Parisian episodes.

For their part, the facades of Cour des Drapiers, those of the oldest part of the Hotel Carnavalet and much of the exterior of this same Hôtel has also been restored.

Beyond being able to observe the objects that once belonged to Marie Antoinette and the novelist Marcel Proust , from June 15, 2021 a temporary exhibition will be inaugurated in collaboration with the Henri Cartier-Bresson Foundation . It has the purpose of highlighting the museum's photographic collection and underlining the importance of the French capital in the life of one of the most important local photographers of the 20th century.
