In addition, there are unofficial records that have reached -33.6 ºC , such as the one registered in the automatic station of the poljé de Vasequilla, in the municipality of Czech (Guadalajara).
This measurement exceeds the official record of our country, which for now continues to be the -32 °C of Estany Gento, in the Catalan Pyrenees. A few days ago, this registry recognized by the AEMET was also pulverized in the Vega de Liordes (Picos de Europa) and in the Clot del Tuc de la Llança, in the high mountains of Lleida.
In addition, extreme minimum temperatures have been measured, below -20 ºC, in various urban centers in the provinces of Cuenca, Guadalajara and Teruel. They highlight the -29.9 ºC in the Teruel municipality of Royuela, nestled in the Albarracín mountain range.
Also in Teruel, they have dropped below -25 ºC in Monteagudo del Castillo, Linares de Mora, Torremocha del Jiloca or Villarquemado.

Data from Barajas and Toledo airports are also exceptional, both with -13.2 ºC , extraordinary figures and more in the case of the capital of Toledo, whose historical series dates back to 1920.
Why is the Iberian Peninsula the cause of this cold wave? The answer is found in its complex orography, the snowy surface, the thermal inversion and the high pressures.
