Los Angeles cried out for a colossal institution that honor the arts, sciences and artists that make up the cinematic universe. Said and done: the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures will open its doors to all moviegoers September 30th.
East new temple of Hollywood cinema , work of Italian architect Renzo Piano -winner of a Pritzker Prize-, will have two buildings: the renovated aerodynamic style building of the May Company, built in 1939 and today known as Saban Building , and a monumental glass spherical building.
The museum will have seven floors
Their 27,870 square meters of surface will offer visitors the opportunity to learn more about the films and their creation process through impressive experiences. The building will have seven floors of galleries for permanent and temporary exhibitions, the Debbie Reynolds conservation studio, spaces for special events, a cafe and a shop.
In addition, the spherical central module will be connected by glass bridges with the Saban Building, where two key points are located: the state-of-the-art David Geffen movie theater, with capacity for 1,000 people , and the terrace of the Dolby Family, which offers inspiring panoramas of Hollywood Hills.
“We will open the Academy Museum with exhibits and programs that will introduce the complex and fascinating world of film through captivating and diverse voices. We will tell complete stories about cinematography : sometimes festive and educational; others, critical and uncomfortable”, commented Bill Kramer, director and president of the museum.
“With a global perspective and anchored in the Academy's unparalleled collections and knowledge, the scope of our content will establish this museum as an institution without comparison in the world of cinema” he added.
The two modules will be connected by glass walkways
“Throughout the last century, cinema has reflected and influenced important historical issues and events . The stories we tell at the Academy Museum are part of those larger narratives, and we are committed to highlight the social impact of cinema ”, he concluded.
For its part, Jacqueline Stewart, Executive Director of Arts and Programming, Academy Museum of Motion Pictures , she stated that “cinema shapes the way we understand history and culture, other people and ourselves in profound and lasting ways. In our effort to create welcoming spaces where people can explore cinematography, We recognize that movies have a unique ability to stimulate dialogue and cultivate empathy”.
What about the content? cinema stories , the core exhibit of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, will span three floors and connect the public with the festive, complex, diverse and international history of cinema.
Throughout these floors, all aspects of the arts and sciences of cinematography will be explored, which, like cinema itself, will evolve and will change over time , highlighting different movies, voices, eras and genres.
Opening, the exhibition will include galleries developed in collaboration with award-winning writers and directors Spike Lee and Almodovar, with the composer Hildur Guðnadóttir and with the sound designer Ben Burt.

other rooms cinema stories will be dedicated to the worlds and characters created in the science fiction and fantasy movies ; the role they play documentaries and narrative films by reflecting and influencing social problems; traditional, stop-motion and digital animation techniques; and, finally, to the history of The Oscar Awards and significant moments in the history of cinema, narrated through a variety of vignettes that highlight outstanding films and artists such as Bruce Lee, Emmanuel "Chivo" Lubezki, Oscar Micheaux, Thelma Schoonmaker, Citizen Kane and Real Women Have Curves.
This large exhibition has been designed by WHY Architecture, a studio founded in 2004 by Kulapat Yantrasast , and will present works drawn from the growing collection of the Academy Museum , as well as from the incomparable collections of the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences.
'Stories of Cinema', the central exhibition of the Academy Museum, will span three floors
On the other hand, the temporary opening exhibition of the Academy Museum, Hayao Miyazaki, is the first retrospective in America honoring the acclaimed filmmaker and his work, including pieces to be exhibited outside Japan for the first time.
This fascinating exhibit, which will occupy the museum's Marilyn and Jeffrey Katzenberg Gallery, features more than 300 items and explore each of Miyazaki's animated feature films -the most iconic of Studio Ghibli-, among which stand out My Neighbor Totoro (1988) and Spirited Away (2001).

On the Way to the Movies: Featured Works from the Richard Balzer Collection , which will be installed in the LAIKA Gallery, on the third floor of the museum's Saban Building, you'll explore the history of visual entertainment that led to the invention of cinema: from the shadow theater, the show or the magic lanterns to zoetropes and praxinoscopes, passing through the cinematographer of the Lumière brothers.
The background: An invisible art , which focuses on the iconic backdrop of Mount Rushmore and The Oscar experience , which will create an enveloping space that simulates the experience that visitors have when they get on the Hollywood Dolby Theater stage , will complete the attractive program that will start from the end of September.
