Gastronomic surfing route through Catalonia

Good vibes and best waves in Catalonia

Good vibes and best waves in Catalonia

The Catalan coast has quite a few decent wave days, many mediocre days and some very good ones. But there is always something to scratch between the months of September to April . Let's go to the mess.

Let's go along the route, describing each surfing spot with its most characteristic bars where you can eat something after catching some waves, wanting to eat a Camp Nou full of proposals or a botanical garden in case you are vegan. We will go in parts and without contemplation: surf and tablecloth.

COSTA BRAVA

It is a wonderful coast although it is quite difficult to have decent waves (despite its brave name).

There is a lot of north wind (strong wind with hurricane gusts from the North). This makes the sea very choppy, although it also passes quite far from the good wave spots. Of course, the winning condition occurs when the sea turns a little to the east. And let the surfing begin.

At the edge of L'Escala, one of the most famous towns in this area, is Sant Marti d'Empúries , a picturesque little town known for its Ruïnes d'Empúries (the archaeological remains of the Greco-Roman city of Ampurias) where you will enjoy some surf breaks.

Hunger? A lot. Go to the nice restaurants in the Plaza Central, next to Calle Major. Here you can opt for a good pizza or typical fish from the area. Let's start with La Terrassa d'Empúries and Can Roura, you will surrender to their fish of the day.

The Terrassa d'Empúries

The terrace of Ampurias, as is, that you must taste

heading south, we stopped in L'Estartit and Pals . These two towns are connected by a very long sandy beach and a thousand breakers.

It is usually one of the few areas that receives waves when there is the mythical Tramuntana . With these conditions they usually leave Long, maneuverable lefts. Get out of the car and walk along the beach until you find your peak all to yourself as there is almost no one . The walk is worth it, it is a wonderful area.

Here we recommend, quickly but not insignificantly, the Ananas pizzeria and hamburger option; if you feel like eating good fresh fish, Les Corones never fails.

A pizza-hamburger option but always gourmet

THE MARESME REGION, THE GREAT SECRET

Between Mataró and Barcelona is this area, incredible for surfing due to its great variety of peaks and few people . It receives sea from south to north. But there are always fewer surfers (because from the north, surfers take advantage of the waves in Barcelona; from the south, the area of the Garraf coast is chosen). Good tip if you are a solo surfer.

We have beaches like vilassar , with a high quality rock bottom; the Masnou breakwater , very long left and that holds a lot of size in the famous "lifted" that, unfortunately and thanks to phenomena such as "El Niño", are getting smaller and smaller.

Where to enjoy in this area? In Vilassar de Mar you have to gather strength at Espinaler , a tavern at the foot of the national road that crosses the coast to Barcelona. Here you must practice that wonder that is the appetizer: a beer with clams, cockles and their famous potato chips, the perfect combination after a good swim.

After a good journey in paddle surfing, we have beach bars like Oblikue in Vilassar del Mar and Vaivé in Cabrera del Mar. Good atmosphere and good plan without waves.

At the port of Sant Andreu de Llavaneres you must step on the myth: Cal Jaume. Their tapas and rice they are simply amazing. Take aim and decide if you deserve it.

In the port of Sant Andreu de Llanvaneres

inside the port of Masnou , is the restaurant El Guirigall , the place to try that Catalan recipe that is the roasted chickens . Also highly recommended is the Can Rin restaurant in Cabrils, the last town with which we will bid farewell to the Comarca del Marese: a beer here is the perfect farewell.

If we keep going down we arrive at Montgat and Badalona. The latter usually has the funds most similar to Barcelona due to its mouths and types of current. Great legends of surfing have been forged there.

BARCELONA

We have arrived in Barcelona. We hope you have arrived on a Monday to go to the session Nasty Mondays in Sala Apolo (if you are a surfer you will have passed through there, it is the obligatory pilgrimage to drink digestifs and dance to the sound of Soren Manzoni).

In Barcelona we have a lot of gastronomic offer, but within that irremediably Mediterranean and surfer flavor, we have to make a stop at Surf House Barcelona. My personal recommendation, famous for its incredible nachos, burgers, salads and natural juices. It is a good option for breakfast before going to the water since they have Açaii Bowl. Let yourself be loved by that environment: It is without a doubt the meeting place for all surfers when they drop by Barcelona.

To the rich taco!

Nearby is ** Woki Market **, a small place where you can eat quickly and at a good price. If you have more time, we recommend Pez Vela. The waves may have treated you well, and you deserve it. It eats wonderfully and in a quite environment cool .

GARRAF COAST

We continue on the route to the south, to the Garraf coast where we find Castelldefels, Garraf and Sitges , Zone of waves with south sea par excellence. Waves are usually a bit flat but it has its days.

in Castelldefels, where there is one of the best rights of the coast Thanks to your artificial breakwater, you should pay homage to Sea Salt Surf Bar, perfect for a good breakfast or brunch. In addition, it is located right in front of the breaker, so you can keep an eye on it constantly.

Perfect breakfast in Castelldefels

In Garraf, one of the most picturesque towns in the area, we came across the La Cúpula restaurant, with incredible views of the coast and quality Mediterranean food. It is synonymous with ending the day of surfing as it deserves. Another option, more relaxed and familiar, is El Chiringuito del Garraf, with unbeatable views, a Mediterranean menu and very pleasant.

The Dome

Idyllic location, always watching the waves

In Sitges, the options for eating multiply: we start with the Kansas restaurant, right on the town promenade, where you can eat well at a good price while you see the waves break to motivate you and take a second bath, to the Sports Bar where you can eat American food in the purest New York style.

If you walk a little inside the town you will find several very appealing places. like El Vivero , a classic where you will literally eat on top of the water and with a perfect terrace with music and spectacular sunsets.
