Urban Visions ArteSantander 2017

It is a matter of preferences. or of tradition . Because for decades vacationers in our country have been divided between those who prefer the northern or southern coasts when planning their vacations. Well, the same thing will happen this July with the art collectors : Your heart will be torn between the two fairs taking place a couple of weeks apart.

the veteran ArtSantander and the youngest Art Marbella they present slightly different profiles, regardless of whether their visitors can bathe in the Bay of Biscay or the Costa del Sol. Of course, in reality, why choose?

The dates allow it to spare, so our suggestion is that you do not miss either of them. Also, their schedules encourage them to dedicate their mornings to the beach, sailing and good food , preparation that is appreciated before entering the abundant offer of the galleries.

ARTESANTANDER

The fair

The inauguration of the new Botín Center designed by Renzo Piano has definitively put this city with a bourgeois soul and long seafaring tradition on the map.

The twenty-sixth edition of its art fair presents a program of forty-two galleries plus two institutional stands, dedicated to Island Council of Lanzarote (the curator Adonay Bermúdez with the artist Rigoberto Camacho) and the Institute of Language and Culture of the Balearic Islands (exhibition of contemporary drawing curated by Mónica Álvarez Careaga).

Among the selected galleries there is a “local” quota of six from Cantabria (attention to **Ion Macareno at JosédelaFuente's stand**), but also others from Germany, Poland or Italy. Most of the program is national: from the young and already powerful Aldama Fabre from Bilbao to the more than established ** Moisés Pérez de Albéniz ** or Joseph of the Hand , passing through ** Espai Tactel ** (Valencia), ** Gema Llamazares ** (Gijón), ** etHALL ** (Barcelona), ** Twin Gallery ** (Madrid) or The great (Valladolid).

Not to be missed is the symposium on collecting and society at the Menéndez Pelayo International University, which will bring together names of the weight of Manuel Segade (director of the CA2M and curator of the Spanish pavilion at the last Venice Biennale) or the Italian mega-collector Patrizia Re Rebaudengo.

The fair expands to the streets with its interventions in various locations in the city. Out of this, the Booty Center It is, logically, the essential visit: either to be amazed by its design or to criticize it (which has been everything).

We also recommend visiting the works of the architect Ricardo Lorenzo, the Cantabrian Frank Lloyd Wright , like the Maritime Station: its port bar is simply priceless. Art is in itself the fishing district, which we should not miss either. And, if there is time left, it is a good idea to go to Comillas, a high summer classic, with its famous Gaudí's whim.

Food and accommodation

The last cry to eat is right now Pump House , in the iconic and recently refurbished Gamazo Dam . In El Sardinero, the Deluz restaurant, located in an old family home, has the most elegant terrace-garden in the city.

And the sardine grills in the fishing district are traditional culinary minimalism. To stay, the classic Hotel Real or the Vincci Puertochico are safe options.

ART MARBELLA

The fair

Three years and growing. The first edition of Marbella Design will be held in April, but before that, at the end of this month, the alma mater alexander zaya returns with Art Marbella, which in many ways follows the example of Miami Art Basel in its premise of uniting art, beach and nightlife. Galleries as powerful as CarrerasMugica, Carles Taché, Max Estrella or Cayón are back.

And, curiously, they repeat others from the Santander fair, such as ** Twin Gallery , Kir Royal and Ángeles Baños **. More international galleries have been attracted, with a special presence from Latin America (Baró from Brazil, Proyecto H from Mexico) and from Europe (from France, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Austria, Sweden and Slovenia).

The artists cover a wide range, as pieces of Miró, Oteiza, Plensa or Fontana that may interest the wealthiest visitors to the Costa del Sol, but also young talents such as Manuel Franquelo-Giner . Among the highlights, stands out an exhibition design work of Blacksmiths Studio , a weight specialist in fairs and galleries.

Neighboring Malaga has become a considerable museum orchard. You always have to go to the Picasso Museum, especially now with the exhibition Bacon, Freud and the London School. The same as the Pompidou Center or the CAC (controversial exhibition by Santiago Ydáñez). The offer is completed by the very peculiar Carmen Thyssen Museum ( The appearance of the real ) and the Russian Museum ( Kandinsky and Russia ), in addition to the center The Thermal .

Marbella Club

Rest at Marbella Club

Food and accommodation

The Puente Romano Hotel –so called because of the 1st century bridge that houses the rest of the thousand-year-old road that started from Cádiz- or the Marbella Club are already two institutions of luxury and relaxation. On the mountain, the Villa Padierna Palace hotel, in a Tuscan and neo-Palladian palace. And the relaxed atmosphere of **CC Guest House** is another good option. Lunches and dinners in the Puente Romano square by the chef Danny Garcia or in Nobu they have no waste.

In Puerto Banús there is Le Bistroman, French-inspired but which also has a sushi bar, and which allows you to organize a good meal or more casual options.

In data: Art Marbella. From July 28 to August 2. From 6:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Marbella Conference and Exhibition Center. Avda. José Meliá, 2. Marbella.
