Europe to debut new night train routes this year

Go to bed in Vienna and wake up in Paris? The wonder of falling asleep cradled by the rattle of the train while you feel like you travel miles through the dark? Traveling by train is always a yes and if that trip is also at night (with bed, of course), then it becomes an all-caps YES.

Therefore, knowing that from this 2021 the state railway companies of Germany, Austria, France and Switzerland have expanded their collaboration to launch new night train services it only makes us jump to the screen of our computer to be ready at the moment in which the tickets can be purchased.

With this initiative the German Deutsche Bahn (DB), the Austrian Österreichische Bundesbahnen (ÖBB), the Chemins de fer fédéraux Suisses (CFF) and the Société nationale des chemins de fer français (SNCF) they plan to build a strong network of night trains (Nightjet) with which, among other things, they want to contribute to facing the challenges posed by climate change, they explain in a statement issued by the SNCF.

Thus, according to the forecasts with which these companies work, they expect that for december 2021 the connections are already operational Vienna-Munich-Paris and Zürich-Cologne-Amsterdam. In December 2023 it would be the turn of another route Vienna-Paris, but this time passing through Berlin or Brussels. and already in December 2024, this network of night-time rail trips would enter Spain thanks to the route Barcelona-Zurich.

The start of the construction of this offer of night train journeys takes place this 2021, declared as the European year of the train. And it is that a few weeks ago, the Council of the European Union adopted this decision with the intention of contributing to increase the proportion of people traveling by train in line with the objectives of the European Green Deal.

“In addition to promoting the train as a sustainable mode of transport capable of maintaining vital services even in unexpected crises, the objectives of the Year of the Train include increase awareness of the cross-border European dimension of rail transport and increase its contribution to the economy, industry and society of the European Union”, reads the statement of the European Council.
