Uclés Monastery: an enclave where culture can be venerated

the beauty of Ucles Monastery , popularly known as "El Escorial de la Mancha" , since his church was designed by the architect from Cuenca Francisco de Mora -disciple of Juan de Herrera-, will be strengthened during the next two years.

At the initiative of the Fernando Núñez Foundation, which was created this summer with the aim of valuing the vast historical and cultural heritage of the town and the Uclés Monastery (Cuenca) , the building will become a cultural laboratory in which they will take place exhibitions, shows, conferences and gastronomic events.

This initiative, which has been baptized MDU RE_BIRTH , will allow visitors to discover the design, production and implementation processes that are found behind the works, which in turn will transform spaces such as the cloister, the large room, the church, the sacristy, access to the crypt, the archive or the priory rooms.

The modification will be carried out through the use of structures of interconnected bars, audiovisual facilities and careful lighting that will encourage the public to make their own artistic interpretations.

MDU RE_BIRTH is one of the first projects Fernando Nunez Foundation , who, after intervening in the so-called "Escorial de la Mancha", intends to develop other cultural proposals in other contexts.

To give life to MDU RE_NACIMIENTO, the creative institution has found its inspiration in history , specifically in the artistic periods of the Renaissance and Baroque : “The means that we are using are the same that were already used in the century XVI, except that adapted to the 21st century” , comment David Pérez, director of the Fernando Núñez Foundation.

In this way, the candles have been replaced by the light of the projectors, the instruments and the voices of the choir by digitally produced sounds , and the inscriptions that the Renaissance carved on the stone walls by virtual images.

In addition, the concepts that are part of this sensory experience they will be expanded by the digital platform of the monastery. “It will be a complementary visit , which will allow the visitor to experience the experience what we propose In its whole", says David Perez.

The first exhibition Constantly changing frame and light , presents before the spectators a new perspective of architecture and of the history of enclave -former headquarters of the Order of Santiago- through a spectacular immersive experience: windows and balconies of the monastery will become light and air inlets while on the way to voice and music output , configuring themselves as places to observe and be observed.

On the other hand, since last August 14, the exhibition #PHEDdesdemibalcón of the PHotoEspaña Festival and the sample Knights in the Sea also decorate with photographs of the confinement and historical images of the Knights of the Order of Santiago (respectively) the rooms of the building.

As for the musical proposals , 2021 will be marked by two events: the premiere of Lux in Tenebris , a multimedia experience based on the work Officium hebdomadae sanctae of Tomás Luis de Victoria (will take place on April 3) and Zaida , a show dedicated to the princess of Andalusian origin -wife of the king Alfonso VI - which will start in the summer.

Finally, we can also anticipate that the Fernando Núñez Foundation will launch in the coming months a study of the Sheet Music Collection of Uclés –which dates back to the 16th century–, made up of pieces from renowned Renaissance composers.
