Antonio López: painter, sculptor, drawing and teacher. The works of the artist from Tomelloso are the result of a slow and thoughtful exercise of reflection and dedication that sometimes extends over several years; though, As Antonio López himself says, a work is never finished.
Now, a new exhibition at the Bancaja Foundation in Valencia brings together almost a hundred pieces by the artist from La Mancha that embarks us on a journey through the painting, drawing and sculpture of the artist from the 50s to the present.
In addition, the Antonio López sample also includes a section dedicated to the figurative painter María Moreno, wife of Antonio López, who died last February.
The exhibition can be visited until January 24, 2021. Access is free for all audiences on Tuesdays from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The rest of the days, general admission is 5 euros and reduced: 3 euros and you can buy them at the box office (Plaza Tetuán, 23).

A PECULIAR CREATIVE PROCESS
The exhibition, which has had the collaboration of the artist himself and his close family environment in the curatorship , has gathered the pieces thanks to the participation of thirty institutions and individuals who have donated works from his collection, allowing a unique selection.
The public will be able to get to know the artist's creative process up close and admire some of the main paintings and sculptures on which he is currently working in his workshop, as well as some works in progress that he has wanted to show the public.
The works come from institutional collections such as those of the Reina Sofía National Art Center Museum, ICO Foundation, ARTIUM Museum. Vitoria–Gasteiz, Bilbao Fine Arts Museum, Marlborough Gallery, Rucandio Collection, MonteMadrid Foundation Collection, Sorigué Foundation Collection, Orpheus Collection, Private Collection courtesy Michel Soskine Inc. Madrid – New York, Valdepeñas Municipal Museum , as well as from more than 25 private collections.
His complex and demanding work process has allowed Antonio López to define and consolidate an extremely rigorous and original realistic poetics, as well as tremendously personal.
Thus, the exhibition aims to reveal how this work process reflects a deep and detailed investigation that he has imposed a multidisciplinary approach and the insistent, almost obsessive, recurrence of certain themes of everyday reality over the years.
The sample is divided into two large blocks
TWO BLOCKS AND A VERY SPECIAL SECTION
The tour is divided into two large chronological blocks. The first room houses the works of the initial years , in which the hyperrealist painter seeks to build his own figurative language.
“It is a complex and dense stage, introspective and very personal. Critics related it to surrealism and magical realism, but there was also talk of subjective realism, everyday realism and transcendental realism, among others”, explain Tomàs Llorens and Boye Llorens, curators of the exhibition.
The second room hosts a more objective record, in which the artist delves into the perceptive experience, focusing on form and light as the ultimate parameters of the representation of a reality that is both stable and changing over time.
“In this area, the works are grouped thematically. The drawings and sculptures around the human figure, the most essential expression of any cultural manifestation, reveal a plastic interest in shapes and textures, as well as a masterful command of scale” say the commissioners.
Almost a hundred pieces from the 50s to the present
The anthological exhibition of Antonio López also includes a very special section dedicated to the figurative painter María Moreno (1933-2020), his wife, recently deceased. Is about the first time both artists exhibited together , apart from group exhibitions with other creators.
Here we can contemplate interior scenes, urban landscapes, garden views, flowers and still lifes that show the affinity of thematic proposals and plastic concerns between both artists, but also the contrast between their respective personal sensitivities and their way of understanding painting.
