On June 18, the long-awaited oslo public library . The great building, keeps more than 235 years of history , has been created by Atelier Oslo and Lundhagem, and is located between the Oslo Opera House and the central station.
Deichman Bjorvika It was conceived as a large library with lots of natural light, but once inside, readers would feel that they were in different intimate and quiet spaces. The truth is that in its six floors and 13,500 square meters there is room for practically everything, not counting the more than 450,000 copies.
In addition to a cafeteria, restaurant, press room, cinema and auditorium with capacity for 200 people , Deichman Bjørvika has a space dedicated to the little ones on the first floor, with recording studios and games rooms on the second and a space for the project** Future Library**. In fact, the bookstore is organized in such a way that it becomes calmer and more contemplative as you go up the floor.
It has been open since June 18, although it was scheduled for March this year.
"We want Deichman Bjørvika to make literature, love of reading and knowledge available to more people. With this we want to strengthen democracy and cultural heritage , and equalize the social differences in our society", said the Deputy Mayor for Culture and Sport, Rina Mariann Hansen, at her inauguration.
Thus, in the new library it will be possible to watch movies with friends, make podcasts, learn to play the piano, sew a dress, use 3D printers, enjoy the views of the Oslo fjord or simply admire the architecture.
Despite its size, there are always quiet and intimate corners.
“Oslo people and visitors can already use the library which we hope will be full of people. I think they will be proud because, after all, this is their building,” Knut Skansen, the library director, said at the opening on June 18.
Although its opening has been done in a very different context from what was thought, it is expected to receive two million visitors each year when the situation normalizes.
For the moment they have adapted to the new security measures, regulating the entry of people into the building: 1,000, compared to the usual limit of around 3,000 . This limit has been established in consultation with local infection control authorities.
The library has more than 450 thousand copies.
