Snow is not just snow. At least not for the Nordic peoples and the Arctic regions. Norwegians, Swedes, Inuits, Yupik... all of them are clear that freshly fallen snow is not the same as snow that has been trampled or that congeals on the branches; and that Recognizing snow that cannot be skied on and snow that has been frozen in thin layers can save your life.

A) Yes, the Swedes have 25 different terms for snow and ice, the Icelanders 46, the Lapland Sami about 180, and the Scots 421! In the Sami language, for example, there are words like cahki, which defines "snowballs that are thrown with the intention of harming", or moarri, "the ice that breaks and cuts off the reindeer's legs".

The snow occupies everything, even thoughts, during the eight kilometer hike to the Fuglemyrhytta refuge from the center of Oslo – you can also go by metro to Skådalen, three kilometers away.

The cabin, built by the famous studio Snøhetta, is shaped like a pentagon, has a very cozy interior (and that there is no electricity or running water) and windows in all directions; also to the ground.

Managed by the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT), it is a very popular place to come for a quiet excursion with a sandwich or to explore, on foot or skiing, the paths that go into the Nordmarka forest. Also for spend the night (there are beds for eight people). And, above all, to enjoy spectacular views over the city and the Vettakollen fjord.

But that will be tomorrow when it dawns: at this time of year, not before 10 o'clock. Right now 'only' snow is seen. lovely snow.
