The Sicilian summer arrives in Madrid in the form of ice cream

Since May 2017, Juan and Rossana - a man from Madrid and a Sicilian - have transferred all that good work to their small local Vergara Street 16 , in the heart of the Opera district.

The star products of this take away corner are ice creams, 100% handmade and for the majority without milk and suitable for vegans , but we also find cannoli – whose dough and filling come directly from Sicily and are prepared at the moment -, espresso, cappuccino, affogato (espresso with vanilla or dulce de leche ice cream), tiramisu, horchata, chinotto (an Italian drink made entirely from Sicilian Moorish oranges), granite (at the moment there is lemon), baby (a typical dessert from Naples) and the brioche gelato , a kind of midnight stuffed with ice cream and homemade whipped cream.

This last one is a classic of the sicilian summers , which are usually very long, and Rossana wanted the people of Madrid to be able to savor the authentic one, so she proposed the original recipe to several pastry shops and chose the most reliable , which finally came from the hand of The Riojan . Now, one detail is missing, the 'tuppo' (a small ball of the same dough as the brioche that is on top of it), but they have assured us that the next batches will take.

It may be that on your first visit you opt for one tub or cone , but sooner or later you will fall surrendered to the Brioche and there will be no going back, you will become addicted . “At first only Italians asked for it, but more and more Spaniards and tourists also ask for it. One day I brought about 60 and they were finished in one afternoon, I remember that some residents of the neighborhood came back to repeat”, With these words, Rossana explains the effect that these ice cream-filled buns usually have..

The flavors tend to change very frequently; along with the classics of a lifetime, such as chocolate or vanilla , you can also taste cheesecake, watermelon, tea matcha, yogurt with honey and nuts, Pistachio from Bronte D.O.P., Turrón de Jijona I.G.P. of Marcona Almonds and even the flavor created by Juan and Rossana: Zuccaru , that carries celery, lemon, basil and green apple . If you don't know which ones to decide on, don't worry, because they work with flat spoons to serve the ice cream, so you can ask for more than two flavors even if you choose to take the small or medium size.
