The Vigo of Domingo Villar

Vigo has just been considered by an OCU study as the city with the best quality of life in Spain

Safety, cleanliness, education, the environment and the offer of leisure, sports and culture are some of the aspects that have earned Vigo the 70 points that have positioned it as the city in Spain with the best quality of life According to the survey carried out the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU).

This study has been carried out to assess the quality of life in the 15 largest Spanish cities: Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Zaragoza, Malaga, Murcia, Palma de Mallorca, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Bilbao, Alicante, Córdoba, Valladolid, Vigo and Gijón.

The OCU surveyed 3,000 Spaniards (members and non-members of the Organization) between the months of October and November 2020 to find out their opinion on the aspects that most influence their quality of life: mobility, citizen security, health services, educational services, cultural, sports and leisure activities, pollution and the environment, the labor market, the cost of living, the real estate market and urban cleaning.

Of all these variables, Spanish consumers prioritize the cost of living, citizen security and crime, mobility, the environment and pollution and health services, compared to others such as the cultural and leisure offer, the educational offer or urban cleaning.

At the other end of the ranking, at the bottom, we met with Barcelona (56) and Madrid (55), that are very poorly valued in aspects such as the cost of living, the real estate market, the environment and pollution and urban cleanliness. Not everything was going to be bad and some other strong point they present: job offers, the labor market and the cultural offer of sport and leisure.

In addition to the classification, this study shows the general feeling that the pandemic has worsened the quality of life in cities, making the cost of living or the labor market seem more unsatisfactory.

To draw this conclusion, respondents were asked to rate the overall quality of life in their city at the time of the survey, but also in other periods: 2015, 2018 and early 2020.

Vigo

Safety, cleanliness, education, the environment and the offer of leisure, sport and culture are some of the most valued aspects of Vigo

Thus, before the health crisis caused by Covid-19 broke out, perception of quality of life was fairly linear from year to year in many cities, with slight increases registered in Zaragoza, Valladolid or Seville but also decreases in Palma, Barcelona and Madrid.

However, the entry into the scene of the coronavirus has been a turning point, causing a drastic drop in the perception of quality of life, which is especially evident in Palma and Seville.
