Cathedral of Santa Eulalia
The Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia (also called, instead of cathedral, SEO , or Seu in Catalan) is the Barcelona gothic cathedral and it is dedicated to the Holy Cross (where it is believed that Jesus was executed) and to Saint Eulalia, Christian martyr, patron saint of the city of Barcelona, today known as the Virgin of Mercy.
What we know today as the cathedral is actually built on the old romanesque cathedral and, before that, it had been a paleochristian temple . Construction began in 1298 and it ended in 1454 , though the façade was not finished until well into the 19th century . This modern part, which was carried out thanks to the patronage of the banker Manuel Girona, is the work of the architect Oriol Mestres. When the works were arranged then, many citizens went there to check the truth of the legend that said that, although the cover had not been built during the Middle Ages , many of the sculptures that were intended to decorate it were carved and that, according to tradition, had been buried at the foot of the cathedral. Many were surprised to see that nothing was found there, which was not an impediment for the whereabouts of the sculptures to be transferred to the popular imagination to another hidden place yet to be discovered. The eardrum of the gate of piety It was sculpted in wood by the German artist Michael Lochner , introducer of Germanic Gothic in Barcelona. But what we can see today is a copy, since the original work was transferred to the Cathedral Museum after an attempted robbery not many years ago.
The gargoyles of Cathedral of Santa Eulalia are famous for their fantastic forms, among which a elephant , a Unicorn and those that, according to tradition, are witches that were petrified in the form of Gothic pipes because they did not respect the passage of Corpus Christi.
