Beaches for Dogs in Spain 2017

“In 2013, one day, walking with my dog kira along a beach in Urbanova (Alicante), a good man approached me and told me to be careful, that Dogs were not allowed to enter the beach and they could fine me . Until then, he hadn't even considered that dogs were forbidden to enter the beaches in summer. So, I started searching the web about canine beaches and all the information I found was very confusing and messy”, recalls the creator of Redcanina.es, Veronica Arnedo Rodriguez.

Thanks to the help of her partner, a web programmer, in 2012 she started this project, a website in which to collect tips on care or tricks for traveling with your dog . And in 2013 geolocation arrived.

“It was **the first map of official beaches for dogs in Spain**. To my surprise, the day after it was published, the map had more than 13,000 likes on Facebook, and various media outlets shared it," recalls Verónica Arnedo Rodríguez proudly, although she admits that "I made it with the few means with which counted, very ugly, but was very successful ”.

CANINE ACTIVISM

“As there were very few beaches, I got in touch with a lawyer, taking advantage of the fact that RedCanina.es already had a good number of visits, to collect signatures at a national level to allow dogs to enter some beaches. but i ran into the problem that this issue is the responsibility of the town councils , Y it is necessary to prepare collections of signatures at the local level ”, explains Arnedo Rodríguez.

Her doubts were the opportunity to help any citizen who was interested in obtaining canine access to a beach in their area by collecting signatures. “ This article has served as a guide for many users who started collecting signatures and now have the good fortune to have a signature in their municipality. canine beach ”, she adds.

THE 2017 MAP

The current map shows all the official dog beaches, 77 at the moment, to go with your dog in summer, as well as practical information: how to get there, its rules of use, photos and videos of the dog beaches . “Now they are the same web users and the tourism delegations of the municipalities those who send me information about the opening of new dog beaches”, explains Verónica Arnedo Rodríguez.

WHAT TYPES OF OFFICIAL DOG BEACHES DO WE FIND?

There are three types of dog beaches in Spain. In the first place, there are dog areas delimited with wooden fences within sandy beaches with low occupation, They have a surveillance service and dog entry control where it is verified that they are dewormed and vaccinated . Some examples are Can Beach in Gandía, Llevant Beach in Barcelona or Pinedo Beach in Valencia.

In second place are the entire beaches for dogs, such as Cala dels Gossets in Santa Pola or Agua Amarga beach in Alicante , where they can walk freely along the entire beach and the town halls have committed themselves to users with dogs and have a daily cleaning service. And finally we find almost deserted beaches "That nobody wants, and the municipalities have placed a dog beach sign to silence users with dogs, such as Cañada del Negro beach, in Murcia or Cala Saliencia in Asturias, They can even be dangerous for our pets. ”, she explains.

“The dog beaches of the future should be like the first ones: delimited areas on sandy beaches that have all the services , with an entry control where it is verified that the dog is dewormed and vaccinated. These beaches do not pose any danger to health, since users, being duly informed, make good use of it and keep it clean (even more so than many other beaches in Spanish territory). We hope that soon we will be able to see them in all the coastal municipalities”, says Arnedo Rodríguez.

And it adds one more “problem” to the equation. “The municipalities find that one of the requirements to obtain the precious blue flags on their beaches is that the entry of animals is not allowed. So we are condemned to have canine areas on second-class beaches ”, he laments.

AN INCREASINGLY DOGGY SPAIN

2016 was the year of dog beaches . “More than 20 beaches were opened to go in summer throughout the Spanish territory. Valencia opened 4 beaches on its coasts, Alicante 5, Castellón 2, Andalusia 8, Asturias 3... But this year, it seems that everything is a little stopped ”, says the creator of Redcanina.es.

Although not many, 2017 has left some joys. “ Marbella has just opened two dog areas on its beaches in The Pinillo Y sea venture , in ** l'Escala **, in Girona, a beach area has been set up to go with dogs, and the province of Barcelona has two new dog beaches: in Arenys de Mar , where only dogs registered in said town hall can access, and in ** Pineda de Mar ** (where dogs from anywhere can access) ".
